Check out these nine books perfect to go on a reading road trip, or take on your summer road trips.

Book for your summer road trips

Books may not be the first thing you think of when planning a road trip. However, they are a great addition to any long or short road trip.

Audio books are great for the whole car to listen to, or pop in some earbuds for individual listening. Once you get to where you are going, having a family book to read can help kids wind down as if they were back home. Of course this works really well if bedtime stories are already a common routine in your home.

Road trips with our families are the best. We get to see the amazing horizons, explore the many different places and learn about different cultures. We all remember that one crazy road trip where Mom read Winn Dixie in the hotels to help us fall asleep.

Here are some of our favorite books where the characters embark on one kind of trip or another.

  1. Sisters by Raina Telgemeier. A graphic novel where sisters learn how to get along on a road trip from California to Colorado

  2. The Walk Series by Richard Paul Evens. A man walks from Washington State to Florida in a desperate bid for hope.

  3. Little House on the Prairie Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. From the Big Woods to the Prairie, this is a journey about a family traveling to the west.

  4. Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne. Kids travel through time and throughout the world in this loved series.

  5. The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Dorothy isn't in Kansas anymore, and now has to take a journey along the yellow brick road.

  6. One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia. 2 girls travel to California to meet their Mom who abandoned them.
